Mt Kilimanjro Climb Umbwe Route is one of the shortest routes to the Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach.  The route is one of the most scenic and non-technical route on Kilimanjaro.  Quite tiring due to the relatively fast ascent to higher altitude though if offers spectacular rewards. Fewer people, untouched forest and shorter walking distances makes it a great option for fit hikers.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival
On arrival at either Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport, meet and transfer to Moshi for overnight and relaxation.

Day 2: Umbwe Gate - Bivouac camp
On this day, after breakfast drive to the Umbwe Gate at which is about 1800m above sea level, passing through villages with coffee and banana plantations. At the park gate your porters and guide will meet you, sign the register before commencing the trek.  The air is thick with moisture and sometimes the path can be muddy. This route winds up through the natural rain forest before narrowing and steepening to climb the ridge between the Lonzo and Umbwe rivers. It offers some spectacular views of deep gorges before arriving at your camp for overnight.

Day 3: Bivouac camp - Barranco camp
After breakfast, continue trekking, shortly after leaving the camp the forest starts thinning and is replaced by rockier terrain, more sparser undergrowth as well as moss covered trees. The trekking path continues along a narrow spectacular ridge. At some point you will catch glimpses of Kilimanjaro rising majestically ahead of you as path flattens as you approach Barranco Valley. At this point, route descends slightly to the Barranco camp which is located in the valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall. You will have a memorable sunset while your dinner is being prepared.

Day 4: Barranco camp - Lava Tower - Arrow Glacier Camp
Today you will start your hike towards Lava Tower which is a famous landmark on Kilimanjaro. As you continue trekking the paths becomes steep and rocky. Turn towards the Western Breach from Lava Tower, steep climb to Arrow Glacier camp.

Day 5: Arrow Glacier - Crater
This day will be one of the toughest challenges. From the Arrow Glacier camp steep scree and rocky outcrops requires a scramble lead up the Western Breach to the crater floor. At this point snowfalls the route might be icy, an ice axe or ski stick becomes helpful at this point. On reaching the crater rim, one will be amazed by the view of snow and glaciers.  

If there is enough time, climb to the Ash Pit which is about one and half hour walk. The Ash Pit is 340m across, one hundred and twenty meters deep and is one of the most perfect formed examples in the world.

Day 6: Hike to Uhuru Peak - Mweka
On this day you will have a hike to uhuru peak which takes about two hours then seven to eight hours to Mweka. Rise up around 0400hrs, have a light breakfast before you embark on the trek. From this point you may encounter snow all the way to Uhuru Peak. The time spent at uhuru peak will depend on the weather conditions, though its not advisable to spend a lot of time due to cold and fatigue.
After enjoying the moment at the peak and taking photos begin the descent trek, walk to Barafu camp where you will have a short rest before heading Millennium camp

Dinner and Overnight at Mweka Camp

Day 7: Mweka camp - Arusha
After heavy breakfast, take a walk to the park gate. Lunch will be served at Mweka Village before taking a drive to Moshi for overnight and celebrations for the tiring climb

Day 8: Departure
Depending on your departure time, our driver will pick you from your hotel after breakfast and transfer you to the Airport to catch your flight back home or onward safari.
